Math Mania

The children are having a fabulous time in math. They created Pattern Block designs and determined the “monetary value” of their design based on a value given to one of the shapes. This activity gave the children the opportunity to investigate relationships among the areas of different shapes. The children shared their strategies for finding the total cost of the design.

The children cheer and clap when I tell them to take out their number tiles to solve “Find the X Tile.” In this activity, the children find the value of x by eliminating digits which could not be x. The goal is to listen and analyze the clues to get rid of inappropriate numbers, and be left with a single digit number. Below is an example of one of the problems. Can you find x?

X is more than the number of weeks in a month.
X is between 2 and 8.
X is not the difference of 10 and the number of sides on a square.
X is not the value of a nickel.
What is x?
